Everything in Gattinara is microscopic, from the small vineyard plots to the wineries in the village. The land in Alto Piedmont has always belonged to the farmers. As with all wines, the taste of the wine is directly affected by the soil properties. The roots of the Gattinara Nebbiolo vines lie in volcanic soils from a supervolcano that was active 250-300 million years ago and its crater measured over 20km. The soils are rich in iron. The Gattinara flavor is more austere, mineral and has finer aromas that the nearby Ghemme Nebbiolos and for that matter the nebbiolos of the Langhe.
They have approximately 4 hectares of vineyards split among 3 historic areas, all DOCG classed. In the Guardia region are the oldest vines planted by his father in the 1920s, and is primarily Nebbiolo with some Vespolina. The average age of the vines there is about 50 years. From this vineyard come the bunches for the Gattinara “Pietro”. The other vineyards are located in Valferana, planted in 1981 and in Osso which were planted in the 1960s. Osso is the 2nd highest vineyard in Gattinara (420m approx).
